Homemade threshing machine! Cool!
Today Jerry, our friend and fellow Self Reliant Community member brought over a threshing machine that he designed and built using a ceiling fan, some rubber stall mats and a 50 gallon plastic drum. The grain we have growing isn’t really dry enough yet, but we just had to try it out and it works great! Gone are the days of beating grain on a tarp on the ground. And this machine is amazingly quiet.
The next invention Jerry plans on making is a winnower/seed cleaner which he will make from a converted gas clothes dryer.

We may all wish we had a wheat crop to harvest this year. I just ran across an article that states that Russia, the third largest producer in the world, has stopped exports on an emergency basis due to drought. http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-08-04/wheat-surges-to-22-month-high-on-russian-drought-corn-soybeans-advance.html
This of course means that other grain prices will rise too—specifically rice. And food prices in general will follow. Looks like it’s going to be a tough winter….
